“Chu Chi”

“Chu Chi” by former Spc. 5 Neil Leinwohl. The painting is inspired by Leinwohl’s time near Chu Chi, Vietnam, with the 34th Engineers. The area was heavily tunneled by the Viet Cong and was extremely dangerous. The elephants, he explained, are a metaphor for the Rome plows, bulldozers that were fitted with special plow blades that his unit used to uproot trees , eliminating enemy cover. The figures below are Viet Cong fighters crawling through the blooded tunnels. The painting will be featured in the Veteran Artist Program’s Pentagon exhibit through November 2014.
