A Soldier and his drum

An unidentified Civil War drummer poses with his drum. According to Glenn Williams, a senior historian at the U.S. Army Center for Military History, drummers were required to learn 40 different beats that signified different orders, everything from drilling to battle orders. Other duties often involved acting as stretcher bearers or even flogging disobedient Soldiers. The average age for a Civil War drummer was around 18, although there are a number of notable exceptions, all the way down to the age of nine.
