According to Glenn Williams, a senior historian at the U.S. Army Center for Military History, drummers were required to learn 40 different beats that signified different orders, everything from drilling to battle orders. Other duties often involved acting as stretcher bearers or even flogging disobedient Soldiers. (Photo courtesy of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center)
